New England, Columbus Day Weekend 2002 (Oct. 12 - 14)

Over Columbus Day weekend Tina and I made a four-state journey through New England. Our first stop took us to White River Junction, VT to visit my old college friend Brian and his wife Laurie. The two hour drive took us four and one half hours in the pouring rain, leaf-peeping traffic of the peak fall foilage weekend. To our credit, four and one half hours included one stop for Dr. Pepper and pretzels, one missed exit and one encounter with the state police.

The rain on Saturday stopped just long enough for us to pick pumpkins (above) and then head east towards Maine, across rt. 112 (the Kancamagus Scenic Byway) in the White Mountains.

Just east of the New Hampshire border we passed by North Conway to our destination of Fryeburg, Maine. Here we stayed two nights at the Admiral Peary House. It was a nice change of pace to stay at a place that didn't have (or need) locks on the doors to the house or the rooms. The admiral, himself, can be seen posing with us in some of the pictures, below. If you ever find yourself in Fryeburg, be sure to check out the The Oxford House Inn for some good New England dining.

The last stop on our journey took us east to the coast where we spent Monday afternoon in Portland, ME before returning to Boston.
